Pomonas fruits

The LIFE Library has many pomological books, and several of them contain
fine illustrations of the forms and colours of fruits. These books
reflect - descriptively og aesthetically - the ideals of changing times.

An example of the pompous style of the Baroque is the first European book on citrus fruits: G.B. Ferrari: Hesperides ... (1646).
Several large national pomological works were published in the Age of Enlightenment, e.g. J. Kraft: Pomona Austriaca ... (1792-96) and J.P. Mayer: Pomona Franconica ... (1776-1801) with beautiful plates coloured by hand.
J.H. Knoop published the first pomological work with coloured illustrations in 1758. DVJB's editions are the French - Pomologie ... and Fructologie ... from 1771.
Pomologische Tafeln depicts the plain black and white line drawings, which illustrate the large German pomological work Illustriertes Handbuch der Obstkunde, 1859-83, in large folio, systematically and in colour.

Pomona was the goddess of fruits in Roman mythology and was often used in books.
