C.J. Trew: Hortus nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens floribus sive amoenissimorum Florum Imagines ... / Der das ganze Jahr hindurch im schönsten Flor stehende Blumengarten oder Abbildungen der lieblichsten Blumen...  1768-86

This outstanding folio in Latin and German is one of the finest pictorial works in the library containing flowers - a so-called Florilegium, focused on the beauty of the flowers. This copy originates from the Classen book collection and contains 170 hand coloured plates, so it is not quite complete as the total number of plates published were 188 during a period of almost 40 years. The work was edited by the German physician, amateur botanist and flower enthusiast Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769), but first finished many years after his death. Several illustrators and pressmen were attached to the project throughout the years - including G.D. Ehret (1708-70).

Below a selection of the plates.

A complete digital presentation together with the texts translated to English is based on the copy from the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew and the National History Museum, London: http://apps.kew.org/hortus/home.do
