Landscape architecture in public facilities 1894-1951
Landscape architecture in public facilities 1894-1951:
Do you recognize the place?
An exhibition of garden drawings from publicly known places. Dive into urban design and landscape architecture in the period 1894-1951.The exhibition hangs in the living room and on the 1st floor as well as in showcases on the ground floor.
From April 2024, we will exhibit garden drawings from our landscape architecture collection at the library. Reproductions hang on the walls and in the display cases you can see examples of original drawings, where you can also get a feel for the different paper qualities and the ravages of time on the drawings, which in several cases are over 100 years old.
Bispebjerg Church Yard - I.P. Andersen, 1929.
The examples in the exhibition show a number of publicly accessible well-known gardens, parks, squares or facilities designed in the period 1898-1944. You can find drawings from Tivoli, Holmens Kirke, Universitetsparken, Kløvermarken, Bispebjerg Kirkegård, Vor Frelser Kirke, Fælledparken and many more places.
Can you recognize the places on the drawings so many years later? Much may have changed since the drawing was drawn. The drawings from the University Library on Nørre Allé from 1937, for example, illuminate the original thoughts from the creation of the garden when the building was established in 1938. Other examples, such as the drawings from Vor Frelser Church or Vallø Slotspark, are renewals of existing facilities.
Haveselskabets Have. Frederiksberg – Edvard Glæsel, 1906.
In some cases, there may be proposals that have never been realized. For example, the exhibition contains 7 different proposals by Edvard Glæsel for the 'Organisation of the Town Hall Square in Kiøbenhavn' from the period 1898-1904 and also 5 different drawings for Blaagaardsplads from 1898. Which proposal would you have liked to see realized?
Town Hall Square, Copenhagen – Edvard Glæsel, 1989-1904.
Student drawings from Landbohøjskolen
The exhibition also includes a few drawings from the library's collection of student drawings. ‘Proposal for Planting the Kgl. Veterinair og Landbohøiskoles Terrain’ by M. G. Steinus from 1899 is, for example, a beautiful look back at the Landbohøjskolen in 1899, and Povl Wad drew a proposal for the Glyptotek's Garden in 1913 as a horticulture student.
